.
Before Nihilistic Orbs was a record label it was a series of band nights at the Empress Hotel Melbourne, starting in late 2009.
.
Each show was recorded and dubbed onto a short run of cassettes by founder Shaun South, whose vision for the label came into focus in mid-2011 with the release of NO001 – Jonny Telaphone’s ‘Ceremony’ 7”.
.
Nihilistic Orbs operated first from a basement in Carlton, then from a warehouse in East Brunswick. Melbourne.
.
The label clocked nine releases in total, and ended after South’s passing in 2013.
The label gained a type of local cult-status for South’s brave choices.
It weaved electronic music through a punk-heavy, staunchly DIY context, while shunning the club and opting for the most bleak and deconstructed versions of ‘synth’ music it could find.
